The Great South West Care Awards are part of 'The Great British Care Awards', a series of regional awards throughout the UK, celebrating excellence across the care sector. The awards promote best practice within the sector and pay tribute to those individuals who have demonstrated outstanding excellence within their fields of work.
We were delighted to reach the finals after receiving two nominations. As directors of Homes Caring for Autism Ltd, Richard Smith and Jan Lacey were nominated in the Care Employer Award category. The award seeks to acknowledge and celebrate employers commitment to care and how this is achieving success in delivering a quality service.
The second nomination was for Richard and Shirley Smith for The Outstanding Contribution to Social Care Award. This special award is to recognise those who are believed to have made a long term outstanding contribution to social care.
The nomination for the Care Employer Award was made by Wendy Moore and the one for The Outstanding Contribution to Social Care Award was made by Mike Heinemans. Mike and Wendy are parents of persons in our care.
Whilst Richard, Jan and Shirley were not winners of their categories on this occasion, their grateful thanks go to Mike and Wendy for the nominations, which also reflect the hard work by all the staff teams across the Company. However, Richard and Shirley were ranked in first place for candidates representing the care home sector in the category of Outstanding Contribution to Social Care Award. As a result they will go forward to the National Finals, to be held in London in May 2012.
We were absolutely delighted to be represented in 2 of the 12 categories for the 2011 Care Focus Awards.
Julie Packer, a Senior Support Worker at Apple Tree House, was selected as a finalist in the Outstanding Supervisor category. Julie started working with us in 2004 and has progressed in the company to Senior Support Worker.
Matthew Low, a Support Worker at Taunton, was selected as a finalist in the New Recruit to Social Care category. Matt began working with us in July 2010.
There was a terrific number of nominations in each category from all around Somerset and there were only 2 or 3 finalists per category. There can only be one winner and on on this occasion Julie and Matt were not
successful. However, to be nominated and chosen as a finalist is a great achievement. Homes Caring for Autism is very proud of them both!

Auldra Gregory, a Senior Support Worker in Hilltop, was selected as a finalist for the Autistic Spectrum Services Award in the Lang & Buisson Independent Specialist Care Awards.
The Independent Specialist Care Awards exists to highlight the range of achievements within the independent social care sector and to pay tribute to those individuals and teams who have demonstrated outstanding excellence in their fields of work.
The Autistic Spectrum Services Award will reward the highest degree of merit in the provision of social care services tailored specifically to individual needs of adults with autistic spectrum disorders. It will recognise the individual or team which can best demonstrate the capacity to change the life experiences or life chances of their service users for the better, whether through supported living, care homes or outreach services.
